ABOUT THIS LESSON

What makes an artwork look 3D? What gives an object depth and dimension?

In drawing, we've got a number of tools we can employ to give what would otherwise be a flat, two dimensional image, form - but none more powerful than light and shadow!

Think about it...

In reality, if we were to place a subject within a room that lit them from every angle, and all the shadows were completely eliminated - their forms would become flattened.

Likewise, if all light was absent and only shadow remained, not only would they lack form and depth - we wouldn't be able to see them at all.

Now comic art is a little different from reality in this regard, because we've got contour lines and texture details to depict our characters and the environments they inhabit with form.

But throw lighting and shadow into the mix, and you'll take your illustrations to a whole other level of depth induced madness!

In this lesson we're going to learn how light and shadow works, and discover the incredible ways we can use lighting techniques to boost the depth and contrast of our art, as well as establish a sense of mood and drama.

You'll leave this lesson with loads more confidence when it comes to lighting setups and placing shadows onto subjects - ultimately making your comic art more page popping than ever before!
