ABOUT THIS LESSON

There's nothing worse than when you're reading a comic, and there's action and explosions erupting all over the place - buildings are crashing down, the sky is falling - chaos is unfolding!... But the characters are stone cold. It's as if... they're not quite registering what's going on around them. They look like total NPC's! - completely checked out of your story.

This is known as breaking sequential congruence... characters don't quite react appropriately to the goings-on around them. And there's one very big reason why you want to avoid it - the audience's suspense of disbelief goes right out of the window!

There's another reason too... if the characters in your book don't care about what's going on in your story... if they're just standing around in derp-mode with blank expressions on their face as the world falls apart around them - why should the audience care?

That's what we're going to be talking about in this lesson - how to align the emotion, expression and reaction of your characters to what's happening in the story. Once you really nail this, your stories will feel way more convincing, as will your cast of characters - and you'll end up with a comic book sequence that's far more impactful.
