Drawing Backgrounds Behind Characters

It can be tough coming up with ideas for the backgrounds behind your characters...

Ideally the composition of the background compliments the character, and matches the perspective they're drawn in - but sometimes, that's easier said than done.

In this lesson I'm going to show you exactly how I tackle backgrounds behind characters, in panels of any size, and from view points of any kind. As an added bonus, you'll also see how I place characters into the frame and set up the shot.

What we'll really be drafting up here are full scenes - not unlike what you'd create for a proper comic. By the end, you'll have a straight forward approach for plotting out your panel art - complete with both backgrounds and characters!
